WEEK REVIEW: UGANDA MAKES IMPRESSIVE START AT AFCON2019 AS LUGOGO HOSTS AFROCAN & AFROBASKET QUALIFIERS

FOOTBALL
Uganda is making its 7th appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and this year’s edition is being hosted in Egypt from 21st to 19th July 2019. Uganda has had an impressive start with a 2-0 win against DR Congo in the opening match, goals courtesy of Patrick Kaddu and Emma Okwi. While in the second game, Emma Okwi again scored for Uganda to draw 1- 1 against Zimbabwe. Africa’s best goal keeper and Cranes Captain Dennis Onyango was on top form to ensure the exceptional performance.

The President of Uganda through his twitter handle expressed appreciation to the Cranes ‘Congratulations to Uganda Cranes for that emphatic 2-0 victory over DR Congo in the opening game of AFCON2019. We are confident you will post more positive results as the tournament progresses and the country wishes you success. Well done.’

Next, the Uganda Cranes play against Egypt on Sunday, 30th June 2019 at 21:00 in Group A where Egypt currently tops with 6 points, Uganda following in second place with 4 points while Zimbabwe has 1 point and DR Congo no point.
Other countries that top their groups include Nigeria (B), Algeria (C), Ivory Coast (D), Mali (E), Cameroon (F)

BASKETBALL
Uganda is hosting the 1st AfroCAN Men and AfroBasket Women Qualifiers from 26th June to 01st July 2019 at the Lugogo MTN Arena.
In AfroCAN, Kenya has registered the best performance so far with two wins. Uganda lost 61-70 to Kenya in one of these performances. In AfroBasket, Egypt tops with two wins. Uganda’s Gazelles won 62-53 against Rwanda and thereafter lost 55-64 to Egypt.

Uganda, Egypt, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania for the top slot to participate in the 1st AfroCAN Men due in Mali from 16th to 28th July 2019 and AfroBasket Women 2019 due in August.

TENNIS
The tennis team is in Congo Brazzaville, for the Davis Cup and Uganda obtained its first win by Frank Tayemba. Team Uganda has been elevated to play in group 3 with an unbeaten record following a David Oringa’s defeat of Habib Gildas Lhebath.

ATHLETICS
Over the weekend, Peruth Chemutai will represent Uganda in the Eugene Diamond League in USA, while Olympic Gold champion Stephen Kiprotich will be in Germany for the Hamburg Half Marathon. Equally, Mande Bushedish and Mande Abdallah Kibet are set to take part in the 10Km Port Gentlin Gabon.

HANDBALL
The National Handball League is happening this weekend at Mandela National Stadium.

LACROSSE
The Lacrosse League 2019 is on at Makerere University Business School (MUBs) on Saturday, 29th June 2019 as MUBs take on Nile Zulu at 15:30 and Panthers verses YMCA at 16:00.
