Who is TUT, the AFCON2019 Mascot

King Tut, the footballer Pharaoh, is the official Mascot for 2019 AFCON, underway in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July 2019.

Mohamed Fadl, the director of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations revealed the official tournament mascot, which represents a pharaoh child wearing an Egyptian shirt and a pharaonic outfit, his foot on the official championship’s ball.

AFCON2019 hosts Egypt, are best known for their rich culture and it is only natural that the branding of #AFCON2019 is heavily influenced by Egyptian culture. The most instantly recognizable thing about Egypt is the ancient Egyptians and none are more famous than Tutankhamun.

TUT refers to Tutankhamun who was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom or sometimes the New Empire Period. He has, since the discovery of his intact tomb, been referred to colloquially as King Tut.

Tutankhamun was nine years old when he became Pharaoh in 1333 BC and reigned for 10 years. Tutankhamun is historically significant because his reign was near the apogee of Egypt as a world power and because he rejected the radical religious innovations introduced by his predecessor and father, Akhenaten. Secondly, his tomb in the Valley of the Kings was discovered by Carter almost completely intact—the most complete ancient Egyptian royal tomb found. As Tutankhamun began his reign so young, his vizier and eventual successor, Ay, was probably making most of the important political decisions during Tutankhamun's reign.
