UGANDA CRANES GET UNDIVIDED SUPPORT AT AFCON2019, EGYPT
The Uganda Cranes continue with stellar performance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations underway in Egypt.
On 30th June 2019, the Cranes lost 0-2 to Egypt, however progressed to the next round of 16 knockout phase. Uganda is today set to play against Senegal. Earlier on, Uganda defeated DR Congo 2-0 and thereafter drew 1-1 against Zimbabwe.
The Government of Uganda has extended satisfactory support to the Uganda Cranes to empower the team to reach this gallant position. Besides financial support, an Executive Bus was procured by government through NCS in April 2019 for the National Team to facilitate the team’s mobility. The President has on many on numerous occasions expressed commitment of support to sports development and in football in particular.
The President, H.E Yoweri Museveni congratulated the team upon its AFCON success via twitter ‘Despite losing to Egypt, Uganda Cranes put up a good performance at the AFCON. It is good that the team progresses to the next round of the tournament. We pray and hope for better results going forward. Congratulations to the team and officials for the success so far.’
Equally, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports expressed gratitude to the team, ‘ Thank you Uganda Cranes for putting up a good fight. Even though you didn’t win, you still go on to the next level. It is our first time at this stage since 1978. Gold has blessed your efforts. May He continue to enable you till we win this.’
Uganda is making its 7th appearance and this years edition marks 41years since the team progressed past the group stages. Uganda’s best performance was in 1978 when Uganda finished in second position after losing 0-2 to Ghana in the finals that were hosted by Ghana.
