Prime Minister Gives Team Uganda Green Light to Glasgow
Team Uganda has officially received the green light to travel to Glasgow, Scotland, for the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games, after the Prime Minister of Uganda, the Rt. Honourable Robinah Nabbanja flagged them off at the Mestil Hotel in Kampala this afternoon.
Bringing with her a message of encouragement from His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni, the Prime Minister urged the 55 athletes to go and make Uganda proud, expressing her happiness at the inclusivity of the team which has 34 women and 21 men, and hailing the Minister of Education and Sports Mama Janet Museveni, State Minister Hon. Peter Ogwang, National Council of Sports, and the Uganda Olympic Committee for a job well done in assembling, preparing, and facilitating Team Uganda.
Hon. Ogwang announced that by way of basic facilitation as well as performance incentive each member of Team Uganda would receive $300 per night spent in Glasgow, and that there would be Shs 100m, Shs 50m and Shs 30m at stake for gold, silver and bronze medals respectively, as well as a monthly stipend of Shs 5m, Shs 3m and Shs 1m for those same medalists for a duration to be announced. The members of Team Uganda have also received money for every day of their last two weeks in training.
Joining the Minister in rallying the team were the British Deputy High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E Tiffany Kirlew, the Chairman of Board of National Council of Sports Ambrose Tashobya, the NCS General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel, and the UOC's Moses Mwase who represented Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare.
In Glaswgow, Uganda will compete in athletics, boxing, netball, 3x3 basketball, cycling, judo as well as swimming and weightlifting which will both field para athletes too, and the Presidents of the respective National Federations were in attendance at the flag-off ceremony, along with team officials of varying designations.
Team Co Captains Husnah Kukundawe (Para Swimming) and Nuhu Batte (Boxing) spoke on behalf of the athletes and gave assurances of maximum efforts and top performances as Uganda looks to add to the 58 medals the country has collected in 15 editions since first participating in 1954.
Team Uganda would later be hosted to a dinner at the British High Commission.
